What Is Action Replay for the Xbox?

Action Replay is an unofficial memory card that allows you to add cheat codes and modded files to your games on a variety of consoles. Action Replay connects to your computer, where you can add Powersaves for use on your console. Released by Datel and managed through the Codejunkies website, there's not an Action Replay for the Xbox 360 and the Action Replay for the original Xbox is no longer for sale. However, you can still find the hardware on resale sites.

While the Action Replay for some consoles and hand-helds includes cheat codes, the Action Replay for the Xbox is geared toward modified save files. Powersaves are save files distributed by Datel and designed by professional programmers to include some cheats or items otherwise unavailable. You can also download user-made save files from the Internet either via the Action Replay software or by downloading them manually.

When you purchase an Action Replay for the Xbox, it comes with the 16MB memory card, a USB dock for connecting the memory card to your computer, and the software CD. This CD also includes the drivers for the USB dock, which you'll need to install before the computer recognizes your hardware. The Action Replay memory card comes loaded with official Powersaves. You can only use the Action Replay card with the dock; it won't recognize other Xbox memory cards.

Insert the Action Replay CD and install the software on your Windows computer. Once the software is installed, connect the USB dock and the Action Replay card to your computer with the CD still inserted; your necessary drivers are located on the CD. Open up the Action Replay software from the Start menu. The program has three columns. The first is dedicated to save files stored on the Action Replay card. The middle is for your save files stored on your computer. The final column is for the Codejunkies website. It comes with two options: official saves from the Codejunkies website, and community -- save files distributed by users. You can drag files between the two columns, but only one at a time. When you're done transferring files, safely eject the Action Replay card from your computer.

Using a modded save file works the same as using a regular save file. It's stored on your Action Replay device the same as a regular memory card. Connect the Action Replay card to your Xbox and start the console. Start your game and select the modded save file to start your game.
