Assassin's Creed - An Oldie But a Goody

Although Assassin's Creed, the first installment by Ubisoft to this franchise has been out for quite a few years now, there has been a lot of negative banter posted around the web about this game. I am writing this review simply to share my opinion on the matter and to try and give this game the commendations it deserves. If you were to compare this game with its sequels then sure, it looks pretty weak, but considering how long ago it was developed and how fresh the idea was at the time, Assassin's Creed is a breakthrough.

2007 was a year where first-person shooters really took off, with highly popular games such as Call of Duty 4 and BioShock being released. Assassin's Creed could have easily been pushed down gamers' wish lists in favor of these more intense shooters but because of its fresh gameplay and storyline, it earned platinum status in less than a year.

The game takes place in modern day and at the start you play as Desmond Miles, a bartender who is captured by worldwide corporation called Abstergo Industries. He is forced to relive the memories of his assassin ancestors with the help of a machine called the Animus and although he is the underlying main character, you will play as Altaïr for the majority of the game. After a small prelude, you are released into the giant free running playground and things really start to become enjoyable. Compared to other previous games of this genre, the animation and graphics are simply stunning. The recreation of historical locations is very well done and looking out across the urban vistas from eerie heights was a great experience for me. The free running is really smooth and fast paced for the most part and the stealth and fighting elements are reasonably good although a lot of work has been done to improve this in the following games.

Although the gameplay mechanics are solid, the missions were met with a negative response because of their repetitive nature. Basically, Altaïr has to redeem himself by assassinating nine targets in three cities during the time of the Crusades and each one is a Templar, sworn enemies to the Assassins. The missions consist of talking to the bureau leader in the city, gathering Intel on the target and then killing the target with your trusty hidden blade. When you look at it this way, its understandable that people could become bored, but if you actually follow the plot the missions become a bit more interesting and escaping from the scene of the crime is also good fun. Something that annoyed me though was the fact that you could only assassinate the targets with the hidden blade, which limits any creative deviation when approaching the missions. As well as this, the combat is also quite limited because all you can really do is wait for the attack and then counter, but this is partially redeemed by the impressive kill moves that the assassin can perform.

All in all, Assassin's Creed is an impressive launch title on Ubisoft's part and although there are a few shaky gameplay mechanics and small mission variety, this game has provided a massive foundation for the sequels that have been released so far. If you take this game by itself at the time it was released, it incorporates a few fresh concepts and overall is a solid third-person action game. You can get this game for dirt-cheap these days and if you like wonderfully realized open world environments to explore then this game is a bargain.

Poker Strategy - Comparing Poker to Stockmarkets

First off let me say before I begin that throughout this article I am going to wring this metaphor dry so if you're not one for a bit of creative logic stop reading now. For the rest of you I'm going to outline the benefits of analysing your bankroll strategy and overall poker strategy as you would a stock portfolio.

Anyone can win in poker; in fact I would bet that the majority of people who have ever played have at least been in the money once. Winning in the short term is not and should not be the ultimate goal of a poker player, but to win at a constant rate, with winnings consistently higher than loses. Now that just sounds like common sense but it is amazing how little beginning players think about this fact fully before buying in to a game.

Consider a typical first time depositor. Perhaps they've played a few home games and are familiar with the basic ins and outs. They deposit $60 and buy in for a $15 sit and go. They come second and win $20. Confidence boosted they book in for a $30 sit and go and lo and behold they squeeze out a win. Feeling sky high they buy in for $100 hoping to hold on for some big bucks, only to lose out and see their entire bankroll drain away. It doesn't matter if you win 99 times out of 100, if you bet your entire bankroll each time you will still lose it all in the end.

This is an extreme example to be sure but it is just to illustrate that you need to take in to account not only your average winning percentage, but also fluctuations and variations that can happen in a game with so many random elements.

Managing Risk

This is where the share markets come in. Just as in poker, many a broker has gone broke by putting all their eggs in one basket and purchasing too many shares in the same company. You may make a few gains but in the long run it's a risky tactic. That's why almost all traders practise what's called diversification, spreading their investments into lots of different companies so that a loss in any one investment has less effect on the overall value.

This is the key point that I think should be considered when developing your poker strategy. Shares and stocks are equivalent to individual games, and the value of the share is equivalent to the average value expected from the game (the chance of winning x amount won). That means that you should always diversify your poker games by only ever buying in to games that are a small fraction of your total bankroll. This way you get a lot more games (different shares) and spread the risk of losing any individual game.

Given that your average expected value from a game is positive, and you only buy in a sufficiently low amount, you will always win in the long run. The more cautious you are. The lower percentage of your bankroll you can buy in, and conversely the riskier you are the larger you can buy in. This is exactly how Chris Ferguson described how me managed to claw his way from freerolls to over $140,000 to date ( http://www.fulltiltpoker.com/chris-ferguson-challenge ) simply by utilising the correct risk management strategy.

Now I'm sure some of you out there are saying it's not very in the spirit of poker to play this way and I admit that I have often gone over my head for a buy-in. But I think it would benefit us all at the tables to change our thinking a bit, and see poker strategy from a long-range perspective.

Tips for the Game Taboo

Taboo is a word game in which two teams compete to guess the most words in the allotted time. However, each guessing word is given five other taboo words that cannot be used to describe it. If a taboo word is spoken, the player must forfeit a point to the opposing team. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins, so use your best strategy to earn the most points.

Use creativity to get your point across without speaking any of the taboo words. Take a second to think about each card you receive before you start saying clues. If a word has more than one meaning, try to get across as many of those meanings as possible to maximize your potential for winning. For example, if the word is "crane," you can say it is a type of flying creature and a piece of construction equipment.

When the other team is playing, your job is to keep your eyes and ears open for potential penalties. Each penalty will give your team a point, so when a new card is drawn, quickly memorize each taboo word and be ready to hit the buzzer if any of them are said. Likewise, a player may not use sound effects or gestures to get a point across, so use these opportunities to earn more points for your team.

Taboo is best played when people with a close relation, such as couples or best friends, are placed on opposing teams. However, there may be occasions when you can exploit a personal relationship with a teammate to quickly earn points by referencing inside jokes or shared experiences. Likewise, your clues should reflect what you know about your teammates. Do not make obscure references if you do not know your teammates well enough to guarantee that they will understand.

When faced with a difficult card you must know when to play and when to pass. Every time you pass a card, the other team receives a point. However, passing is worth it if you can make up for the penalty. For example, if your team has guessed several cards in a row, you can afford to pass to keep the momentum going. Likewise, if you do not understand the word, your best strategy is to pass.
